PostgreSQL is a sophisticated
database server that supports almost all SQL constructs,
including subselects, transactions, and user-defined types
and functions. Additionally, it provides data storage and
analysis, administrative tasks, web-based or any custom database
application. PostgreSQL is more feature-rich than other free
SQL implementations.

A number of web tools now
offer PostgreSQL interfaces. While PostgreSQL is not yet fully ANSI-compliant,
it does support several features not found in ANSI SQL, such as
inheritance. It also supports declarative queries in SQL, query
optimization, concurrency control, transactions, multiuser support
and a number of security features.
PostgreSQL is BSD-licensed.
Because many developers are constantly using and adding to PHP,
new features evolve quickly.

Relational
PostgreSQL is an essentially relational DBMS that can be extended
to handle complex objects, rules, and be highly extensible. PostgreSQLincludes
features found in most full fledged relational DBMSs such as declarative
queries in SQL, query optimization, concurrency control, transactions,
and multi-user support.
Highly
Extensible
PostgreSQL allows
user-defined operators, types, functions, and access methods.
Object-relational
PostgreSQL supports
some object-oriented features such as inheritance.
Full
featured
PostgreSQL provides
many features of commercial SQL products including client-server
support, online back up, multiple index types, multicolumn indexes,
and unique indexes,
Programming
languages
You can use C, C++,
Java, Perl 4, Perl5 OO, PHP, Python and Tcl with PostgreSQL.
Standards-based
PostgreSQL supports
standards for ODBC and many of the standards for ANSI 92.
Multiplatform
PostgreSQL is supported
on most UNIX platforms.
